What are angels?

Angels are heavenly beings who serve in the Kingdom of God in various functions. The word angel comes from the Latin angelus which means messenger and designates its main function.

Why did God create angels?

God created angels to serve in His Kingdom: "all things were created by Him and for Him" (Colossians 1:16). Angels exist and serve God by announcing His message. They intervene in the natural world under the command of God.

How are the angels?

Angels have strength and intelligence above men (2 Peter 2:11), but they are not omniscient or omnipotent. Unlike men, angels are immortal, do not marry and do not reproduce (Matthew 22:30 and Luke 20:35-36).

Because of their heavenly bodies, angels are invisible to the eyes of men. Although invisible, angels can appear in visions and dreams (Daniel 4:13 and Genesis 28:10-12).

In some specific situations angels can become visible - adopting the human form - when it is necessary to fulfill God's purpose (John 20:11-13 and Acts 12:7-9).

Are there evil angels?

The Bible says that there are good angels and angels that have been corrupted. God did not create evil angels, all creation was good in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 1:31). Like human beings, God created angels with free will and freedom of choice.

Even in the presence of God - and with the right to choose - satan rebelled against the Most High, desiring His glory and dominion. Jealous of being like God, the sevil with his power of influence deceived a third of the angels - as well as Adam and Eve - who fell into sin. Satan's corruption and fall was described poetically in the passages of Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:14-16.

What are the types of angels? How are they organized?

The Bible also indicates that angels are organized into different classes. These classes are mentioned in the biblical texts as follows:

• Cherubs: they appear several times in biblical texts as protective angels (cf. Genesis 3:24). In keeping with this sense of protection, on the Ark of the Covenant were images of cherubs (Exodus 25:20, 37:9).
• Seraphim: they are mentioned as being angels dedicated to the constant worship of the Lord (Isaiah 6:2,6).
• Archangel: only Michael and Gabriel are mentioned in the Bible belonging to this class. Clearly, the archangel appears to be a powerful angel who has a leading role among the others (Daniel 8:16, Revelation 12:7).
• Other angels: the Bible mentions the existence and performance of many other angels. These angels are organized in a hierarchy, but the Bible does not say much about it. The New Testament even uses the expression “principalities and powers” to indicate the different classes of angels, both among the angels of God and among the fallen angels (Ephesians 3:10,; 6:12; Colossians 1:16, 2:13; 1 Peter 3:22).

Do I have a guardian angel?

Some believe that we have our own "guardian angel", assigned just for us. Jesus said of those who come to Him with pure faith (Matthew 18:4-6) "that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in Heaven" (verse 10). However, this does not necessarily mean that there is an angel assigned to each person. It could mean several angels for each person or for all believers, and with random assignments.

I am allowed to worship angels?

Some people are almost obsessed or almost worship angels. Angels are real, but care must be taken to give them too much credit because the true credit for miracles and answered prayers must go to God!

Christians must diligently follow the Ten Commandments, the first of which is very explicit: "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20: 3).

Daniel and the apostle John are forbidden various times to worship the archangel (Revelation 19:10, 22:9). Jesus tells satan that one is ONLY allowed to worship God.
